The Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland has told the Minister for Justice it would be “a serious mistake” to appoint a new garda commissioner until it has completed its work. !!

The Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland has told the Minister for Justice it would be “a serious mistake” to appoint a new garda commissioner until it has completed its work. !!
The commission is due to produce its final report on the transformation of policing by September 2018. !!
In a letter to Charlie Flanagan released today, Chairperson Kathleen O’Toole said the commission’s recommendations will affect the future role and responsibilities of any new garda commissioner, and the management structure of An Garda Síochána. !!
She said the commission’s work has so far identified the need for significant changes, including legislation. !!
Ms O’Toole also said it would not be reasonable to expect credible candidates to come forward in the absence of clarity as to what the job would entail. !!
The commission has also pointed out that the key problem in An Garda Síochána is the capacity to effect change in the organisation, and that technical assistance and support needs to be provided to Acting Garda Commissioner Dónall Ó Cualáin as a matter of urgency. !!
